It was inevitable that I would be a gardener. Everyone in my family gardened.....everyone in our neighborhood gardened.....and, when I was a kid, I thought that everyone in the world gardened! I have been a passionate gardener all of my life - most of those years in the great state of Maine, where I was challenged by the rocky soils of northern Maine's St. John Valley - Zone 3. Born in extremely northern Maine, I grew up in a small town called Fort Kent that borders Canada. I raised my wonderful son, Erik and spent many years working in my stained and fused glass business in a small town called St. Agatha. My ten acres were planted with vegetables, a small apple orchard, a large rock garden, lots of perennial and annual beds and trails mown through the fields and into the woods - so that I could wander through all of it. Now living in Orono, I garden in heavy clay soil that stays wet too long and then dries to a solid, impenetrable, cracked mess. But, I'm in Zone 5, and that somehow feels like I've moved to the tropics of Maine! It opens up many other gardening possibilities.......... Please feel free to contact me with your questions and comments. Most of all, tell me about your experiences gardening in the great state of Maine!
